The Substance Ale Beer Review

A few weeks ago, the greatĀ Brews Springstein from Oakdale Liquors here in Tewksbury got The Substance Ale from Bissell Brothers Brewing into the store. He posted it on Instagram but since I was bullshitting around the house being an outstanding husband and father, it was gone by the time I saw the post and got to the store. I was forced to pick up some other swill that was hardly the same. I’m not a quitter though.

Even though Brews said this would probably be the last time they distributed in Massachusetts, (they were only distributing here during Covid) I was not ready to give up the dream of tasting this sweet nectar so many before me had the pleasure of consuming. TheĀ Substance is brewed in Portland, Maine which is about an hour and twenty minutes from my house. That’s not that far when you think about it. If they were not going to bring it to me, I was going to have to go get it myself. (Which I did.)

I knew the second I opened the tallboy can (this was after I got home), that I made the right choice. I swear on everything holy, the beer smells like weed. Good weed too. Don’t get me wrong, there is a little mango/orange in there too but the weed is hard to miss. As for taste, it’s not all that hoppy for an IPA but that’s fine with me (It was still pretty bitter at the end). It had a fruity taste that’s typical of the New England IPAs but it is far from typical in terms of quality (baller status). I had a hard time not drinking the entire four pack in one afternoon but since it is a 6.6% APV I stopped after three. As Frank the Tank said, “Once it hits your lips, it’s so good.”

I can see myself drinking these anywhere at anytime but with my wife around so I don’t try to set any consumption records with it. It’s just strong enough that you could get wild with it if you don’t have a governor but it is not too strong that day drinking is out of the question. It’s a test of will power for sure. The next time I get it, I think I am going to save it for steak night because there is a chance that it is perfect with a a ribeye or another fatty cut. I don’t know for sure, but I would bet it would pair awesome.
